Dua seeking Refuge against Diseases

اللّٰهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُبِكَ مِنَ الْبَرَصِ ، وَالْجُنُونِ ، وَالْجُذَامِ ، وَمِنْ سَيِّءِ الْأَسْقَامِ

أَعُوذُ بِكَلِمَاتِ اللَّهِ التَّامَّاتِ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا خَلَقَ

It was narrated that Abu Hurairah said: “A scorpion stung a man and he did not sleep all the night. It was said to the Prophet (ﷺ): ‘So- and-so was stung by a scorpion and he did not sleep all the night.’ He said: ‘If he had said, last night: A’udhu bikalimatil-lahit-tammati min sharri ma khalaq (I seek refuge in the Perfect Words of Allah from the evil of that which He has created), the scorpion sting would not have harmed him, until morning.’”

“I beseech Allah the Great, the Rab of the Great Throne, to heal you.”

Recite the Surah Al-Fathiha

Abu Sa`id Al-Khudri reported:

Some of the companions of the Prophet (PBUH) came across a tribe amongst the tribes of the Arabs, and that tribe did not entertain them. While they were in that state, the chief of that tribe was bitten by a snake (or stung by a scorpion). They said, (to the companions of the Prophet (PBUH), “Have you got any medicine with you or anybody who can treat with Ruqya?” The Prophet’s companions said, “You refuse to entertain us, so we will not treat (your chief) unless you pay us for it.”

So, they agreed to pay them a flock of sheep. One of them (the Prophet’s companions) started reciting Surat-al-Fathiha and gathering his saliva and spitting it (at the snake-bite). The patient was cured and his people presented the sheep to them, but they said, “We will not take it unless we ask the Prophet (whether it is lawful).” When they asked him, he smiled and said, “How do you know that Surat-al-Fathiha is a Ruqya? Take it (flock of sheep) and assign a share for me.”

Recite the Mu’awwidhat (Surah Al-Falaq and Surah An-Nas)

Recite the Mu’awwidhat (Surah Al-Falaq and Surah An-Nas), blow into your hands and rub them over your body.

Aisha narrated that whenever Allah’s Messenger (PBUH) became sick, he would recite Mu’awwidhat (Surah Al-Falaq and Surah An- Nas) and then blow his breath over his body. When he became seriously ill, she used to recite the two Surahs, blow into his hands and rub his hands over his body. [Sahih Al-Bukhari]

What the Prophet (saws) recited to seek refuge for others

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ بِتُرْبَةِ أَرْضِنَا بِرِيقَةِ بَعْضِنَا لِيُشْفَى سَقِيمُنَا بِإِذْنِ رَبِّنَا

It was narrated from ‘Aishah that one of the things that the Prophet (ﷺ) used to say for the sick person, with saliva on his finger (dipped in dust), was:

“Bismillah, turbatu ardina, biriqati ba’dina, liyushfa saqimuna. Bi’dhni Rabbina

(In the Name of Allah, the dust of our land mixed with the saliva of one of us, to cure our sick one by the permission of our Lord).”

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ أَرْقِيكَ مِنْ كُلِّ شَىْءٍ يُؤْذِيكَ مِنْ شَرِّ كُلِّ نَفْسٍ أَوْ عَيْنٍ أَوْ حَاسِدٍ اللَّهُ يَشْفِيكَ بِسْمِ اللَّهِ أَرْقِيكَ

It was narrated from Abu Sa’eed that Jibra’il came to the Prophet (ﷺ) and said: “O Muhammad, you are ill. He said: ‘Yes.’ He said:

Bismillahi arqika, min kulli shay’in yu’dhika, min sharri kulli nafsin aw ‘aynin aw hasidin. Allahu yashfika, bismillahi arqika

(In the Name of Allah I perform Ruqyah for you, from everything that is harming you, from the evil of every soul or envious eye, may Allah heal you. In the Name of Allah I perform Ruqyah for you).

Dua of Prophet Ayyub A.S

:::hadith[Surah Al-Anbya 21:83]

أَنِّي مَسَّنِيَ الضُّرُّ وَأَنتَ أَرْحَمُ الرَّاحِمِينَ

:::reference[Surah Al-Anbya 21:83] “Indeed, adversity has touched me, and You are the most merciful of the merciful.”

Allah does not send down any disease, but He also sends down the cure for it

حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بَشَّارٍ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ مَهْدِيٍّ، حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ، عَنْ عَطَاءِ بْنِ السَّائِبِ، عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ قَالَ ‏ ”‏ مَا أَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ دَاءً إِلاَّ أَنْزَلَ لَهُ دَوَاءً ‏”‏ ‏.‏

It was narrated from ‘Abdullah that the Prophet (ﷺ) said: “Allah does not send down any disease, but He also sends down the cure for it.”

حَدَّثَنَا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ الْجَوْهَرِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ ابْنُ عُلَيَّةَ، حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ السَّائِبِ بْنِ بَرَكَةَ، عَنْ أُمِّهِ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ، قَالَتْ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ إِذَا أَخَذَ أَهْلَهُ الْوَعْكُ أَمَرَ بِالْحَسَاءِ ‏.‏ قَالَتْ وَكَانَ يَقُولُ ‏ ”‏ إِنَّهُ لَيَرْتُو فُؤَادَ الْحَزِينِ وَيَسْرُو عَنْ فُؤَادِ السَّقِيمِ كَمَا تَسْرُو إِحْدَاكُنَّ الْوَسَخَ عَنْ وَجْهِهَا بِالْمَاءِ ‏”‏ ‏.‏

It was narrated that ‘Aishah said: “If any of his family members became ill, the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) would order that some broth be made. And he would say: ‘It consoles the grieving heart and cleanses the ailing heart, as anyone of you cleanses her face of dirt with water.’”

Black Seed

حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ رُمْحٍ، وَمُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْحَارِثِ الْمِصْرِيَّانِ، قَالاَ حَدَّثَنَا اللَّيْثُ بْنُ سَعْدٍ، عَنْ عُقَيْلٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ، أَخْبَرَنِي أَبُو سَلَمَةَ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ، وَسَعِيدُ بْنُ الْمُسَيَّبِ، أَنَّ أَبَا هُرَيْرَةَ، أَخْبَرَهُمَا أَنَّهُ، سَمِعَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ يَقُولُ ‏ ”‏ إِنَّ فِي الْحَبَّةِ السَّوْدَاءِ شِفَاءً مِنْ كُلِّ دَاءٍ إِلاَّ السَّامَ ‏”‏ ‏.‏ وَالسَّامُ الْمَوْتُ ‏.‏ وَالْحَبَّةُ السَّوْدَاءُ الشُّونِيزُ ‏.‏

Abu Hurairah narrated that he heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say: “In black seed there is healing for every disease, except the Sam.” “Sam means death. And black seed is Shuwniz.”

Sickness is expiation for sins

Volume 7, Book 70, Number 544:

Narrated ‘Aisha:

(the wife of the Prophet) Allah’s Apostle said, “No calamity befalls a Muslim but that Allah expiates some of his sins because of it, even though it were the prick he receives from a thorn.”

Volume 7, Book 70, Number 545: Narrated Abu Sa’id Al-Khudri and Abu Huraira:

The Prophet said, “No fatigue, nor disease, nor sorrow, nor sadness, nor hurt, nor distress befalls a Muslim, even if it were the prick he receives from a thorn, but that Allah expiates some of his sins for that.”

Volume 7, Book 70, Number 546: Narrated Kab:

The Prophet said, “The example of a believer is that of a fresh tender plant, which the wind bends lt sometimes and some other time it makes it straight. And the example of a hypocrite is that of a pine tree which keeps straight till once it is uprooted suddenly.

Volume 7, Book 70, Number 547: Narrated Abu Huraira:

Allah’s Apostle said, “The example of a believer is that of a fresh tender plant; from whatever direction the wind comes, it bends it, but when the wind becomes quiet, it becomes straight again. Similarly, a believer is afflicted with calamities (but he remains patient till Allah removes his difficulties.) And an impious wicked person is like a pine tree which keeps hard and straight till Allah cuts (breaks) it down when He wishes.” (See Hadith No. 558, Vol. 9.)

Volume 7, Book 70, Number 548: Narrated Abu Huraira:

Allah’s Apostle said, “If Allah wants to do good to somebody, He afflicts him with trials.”

Volume 7, Book 70, Number 549: Narrated Aisha:

I never saw anybody suffering so much from sickness as Allah’s Apostle

Volume 7, Book 70, Number 550: Narrated ‘Abdullah:

I visited the Prophet during his ailments and he was suffering from a high fever. I said, “You have a high fever. Is it because you will have a double reward for it?” He said, “Yes, for no Muslim is afflicted with any harm but that Allah will remove his sins as the leaves of a tree fall down.”

Volume 7, Book 70, Number 551: Narrated ‘Abdullah:

I visited Allah’s Apostle while he was suffering from a high fever. I said, “O Allah’s Apostle! You have a high fever.” He said, “Yes, I have as much fever as two men of you.” I said, “Is it because you will have a double reward?” He said, “Yes, it is so. No Muslim is afflicted with any harm, even if it were the prick of a thorn, but that Allah expiates his sins because of that, as a tree sheds its leaves.”
