Duas before Sleeping

What to say before sleeping

What to say before Sleeping
Narrated Hudhaifa: Whenever the Prophet (ﷺ) intended to go to bed, he would recite: "Bismika Allahumma amutu wa ahya (With Your name, O Allah, I die and I live)." And when he woke up from his sleep, he would say: "Al-hamdu lil-lahil-ladhi ahyana ba'da ma amatana; wa ilaihi an-nushur (All the Praises are for Allah Who has made us alive after He made us die (sleep) and unto Him is the Resurrection). "

The last two verses of Soorat al-Baqarah

The last two verses of Soorat al-Baqarah

It was narrated from Abu Mas’ood al-Ansaari (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Whoever recites the last two verses of Soorat al-Baqarah at night, they will suffice him.” Narrated by al-Bukhaari (5009) and Muslim (2714). Ibn al-Qayyim said in al-Waabil al-Sayyib (132): They will suffice him against any evil that may harm him.

It was narrated that ‘Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said:

“I did not think that any sane person could sleep without reciting the last three verses of Soorat al-Baqarah.”

In al-Adhkaar (220), al-Nawawi attributed it to the report of Abu Bakr ibn Abi Dawood, then he said: It is saheeh according to the conditions of al-Bukhaari and Muslim.

Quran 2:285-286

(285) The Messenger has believed in what was revealed to him from his Lord, and [so have] the believers. All of them have believed in Allāh and His angels and His books and His messengers, [saying], "We make no distinction between any of His messengers." And they say, "We hear and we obey. [We seek] Your forgiveness, our Lord, and to You is the [final] destination."

(286) Allāh does not charge a soul except [with that within] its capacity. It will have [the consequence of] what [good] it has gained, and it will bear [the consequence of] what [evil] it has earned. "Our Lord, do not impose blame upon us if we have forgotten or erred. Our Lord, and lay not upon us a burden like that which You laid upon those before us. Our Lord, and burden us not with that which we have no ability to bear. And pardon us; and forgive us; and have mercy upon us. You are our protector, so give us victory over the disbelieving people."[111]

Quran 2: 255

(255) Allāh - there is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living,[98] the Self-Sustaining.[99] Neither drowsiness overtakes Him nor sleep. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Who is it that can intercede with Him except by His permission? He knows what is [presently] before them and what will be after them,[100] and they encompass not a thing of His knowledge except for what He wills. His Kursī[101] extends over the heavens and the earth, and their preservation tires Him not. And He is the Most High,[102] the Most Great.[103]

Last 3 Chapters of The Noble Quran

al-Ikhlaas and al-Mi’wadhatayn [i.e., the last three soorahs of the Quran]

It was narrated from ‘Aa’ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) that when the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) went to bed every night, he would hold his hands together and blow into them, and recite into them Qul Huwa Allahu Ahad, Qul a’oodhu bi rabb il-falaq and Qul a’oodhu bi rabb il-naas. Then he would wipe them over whatever he could of his body, starting with his head and face and the front of his body, and he would do that three times. Narrated by al-Bukhaari (5017).

It was narrated that Ibraaheem al-Nakha’i said:

They regarded it as mustahabb to recite these soorahs every night three times: Qul Huwa Allahu Ahad and al-Mi’wadhatayn. Al-Nawawi said in al-Adhkaar (221): its isnaad is saheeh according to the conditions of Muslim.

Reciting Surah al-Kafirun

Nawfal al-Ashja’i (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) said to me: “Recite ‘Say: O disbelievers’ [al-Kafirun 109], then go to sleep at the end of it, for it is a disavowal of shirk.” Narrated by Abu Dawud (5055); classed as hasan by Ibn Hajar in Nataij al-Afkar (3/61).

Quran 17:1-111

(1) Exalted[722] is He who took His Servant [i.e., Prophet Muḥammad (ﷺ)] by night from al-Masjid al-Ḥarām to al-Masjid al-Aqṣā,[723] whose surroundings We have blessed, to show him of Our signs. Indeed, He is the Hearing,[724] the Seeing.[725]

(10) And that those who do not believe in the Hereafter - We have prepared for them a painful punishment.

(11) And man supplicates for evil [when angry] as he supplicates for good, and man is ever hasty.[730]

(100) Say [to them], "If you possessed the depositories of the mercy of my Lord, then you would withhold out of fear of spending." And ever has man been stingy.

(101) And We had certainly given Moses nine evident signs, so ask the Children of Israel [about] when he came to them and Pharaoh said to him, "Indeed I think, O Moses, that you are affected by magic."

(102) [Moses] said, "You have already known that none has sent down these [signs] except the Lord of the heavens and the earth as evidence, and indeed I think,[776] O Pharaoh, that you are destroyed."

(103) So he intended to drive them from the land, but We drowned him and those with him all together.

(104) And We said after him [i.e., Pharaoh] to the Children of Israel, "Dwell in the land, and when there comes the promise [i.e., appointment] of the Hereafter, We will bring you forth in [one] gathering."

(105) And with the truth We have sent it [i.e., the Qur’ān] down, and with the truth it has descended. And We have not sent you, [O Muḥammad], except as a bringer of good tidings and a warner.

(106) And [it is] a Qur’ān which We have separated [by intervals] that you might recite it to the people over a prolonged period. And We have sent it down progressively.

(107) Say, "Believe in it or do not believe." Indeed, those who were given knowledge before it[777] - when it is recited to them, they fall upon their faces in prostration,

(108) And they say, "Exalted is our Lord! Indeed, the promise of our Lord has been fulfilled."

(109) And they fall upon their faces weeping, and it [i.e., the Qur’ān] increases them in humble submission.

(110) Say, "Call upon Allāh or call upon the Most Merciful [ar-Raḥmān]. Whichever [name] you call - to Him belong the best names." And do not recite [too] loudly in your prayer or [too] quietly but seek between that an [intermediate] way.

(111) And say, "Praise to Allāh, who has not taken a son and has had no partner in [His] dominion and has no [need of a] protector out of weakness; and glorify Him with [great] glorification."

Quran 39:1-75

(1) The revelation of the Book [i.e., the Qur’ān] is from Allāh, the Exalted in Might, the Wise.

(2) Indeed, We have sent down to you the Book, [O Muḥammad], in truth. So worship Allāh, [being] sincere to Him in religion.

(3) Unquestionably, for Allāh is the pure religion.[1339] And those who take protectors besides Him [say], "We only worship them that they may bring us nearer to Allāh in position." Indeed, Allāh will judge between them concerning that over which they differ. Indeed, Allāh does not guide he who is a liar and [confirmed] disbeliever.

(4) If Allāh had intended to take a son, He could have chosen from what He creates whatever He willed. Exalted is He; He is Allāh, the One, the Prevailing.[1340]

(5) He created the heavens and earth in truth. He wraps the night over the day and wraps the day over the night and has subjected the sun and the moon, each running [its course] for a specified term. Unquestionably, He is the Exalted in Might, the Perpetual Forgiver.[1341]

(6) He created you from one soul. Then He made from it its mate, and He produced for you from the grazing livestock eight mates.[1342] He creates you in the wombs of your mothers, creation after creation, within three darknesses.[1343] That is Allāh, your Lord; to Him belongs dominion. There is no deity except Him, so how are you averted?

(7) If you disbelieve - indeed, Allāh is Free from need of you. And He does not approve for His servants disbelief. And if you are grateful, He approves [i.e., likes] it for you; and no bearer of burdens will bear the burden of another. Then to your Lord is your return, and He will inform you about what you used to do. Indeed, He is Knowing of that within the breasts.

(10) Say,[1345] "O My servants who have believed, fear your Lord. For those who do good in this world is good, and the earth of Allāh is spacious. Indeed, the patient will be given their reward without account [i.e., limit]."

(11) Say, [O Muḥammad], "Indeed, I have been commanded to worship Allāh, [being] sincere to Him in religion.

(12) And I have been commanded to be the first [among you] of the Muslims."

(13) Say, "Indeed I fear, if I should disobey my Lord, the punishment of a tremendous Day."

(14) Say, "Allāh [alone] do I worship, sincere to Him in my religion,

(15) So worship what you will besides Him." Say, "Indeed, the losers are the ones who will lose themselves and their families on the Day of Resurrection. Unquestionably, that is the manifest loss."

(16) They will have canopies [i.e., layers] of fire above them and below them, canopies. By that Allāh threatens [i.e., warns] His servants. O My servants, then fear Me.

(17) But those who have avoided ṭāghūt,[1346] lest they worship it, and turned back to Allāh - for them are good tidings. So give good tidings to My servants

(18) Who listen to speech and follow the best of it. Those are the ones Allāh has guided, and those are people of understanding.

(19) Then, is one who has deserved the decree of punishment [to be guided]? Then, can you save one who is in the Fire?

(20) But those who have feared their Lord - for them are chambers,[1347] above them chambers built high, beneath which rivers flow. [This is] the promise of Allāh. Allāh does not fail in [His] promise.

(21) Do you not see that Allāh sends down rain from the sky and makes it flow as springs [and rivers] in the earth; then He produces thereby crops of varying colors; then they dry and you see them turned yellow; then He makes them [scattered] debris. Indeed in that is a reminder for those of understanding.

(22) So is one whose breast Allāh has expanded to [accept] Islām and he is upon [i.e., guided by] a light from his Lord [like one whose heart rejects it]? Then woe to those whose hearts are hardened against the remembrance of Allāh. Those are in manifest error.

Morning Evening Azkar timings

Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen (may Allah have mercy on him) said:

The author (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Chapter on dhikr in the morning and the evening.

What he meant by morning and evening was at the beginning of the day, and at the end of the day and the beginning of the night. The morning begins when dawn breaks and ends when the sun has risen at the forenoon. And the evening begins with ‘Asr prayer and ends with ‘Isha’ prayer or thereabouts.

End quote from Sharh Riyadh as-Saaliheen

Ibn al-Qayyim (may Allah have mercy on him) said:

Chapter on remembering Allah (dhikr) at the two ends of the day (as mentioned in Hud 11:114), which are the times between Fajr and sunrise, and between ‘Asr and Maghrib. Allah, may He be glorified and exalted) says:

“O you who believe! Remember Allah with much remembrance. And glorify His Praises morning and afternoon” [al-Ahzaab 33:41-42]. The “afternoon”: al-Jawhari said: This is the time after ‘Asr until Maghrib. And Allah, may He be exalted, says (interpretation of the meaning): “and glorify the praises of your Lord in the ‘Ashiy (i.e. the time period after the midnoon till sunset) and in the Ibkaar (i.e. the time period from early morning or sunrise till before midnoon)” [Ghaafir 40:55].

The ibkaar is the beginning of the day and the ‘ashiy is the end of the day. And Allah, may He be exalted, says (interpretation of the meaning): “and glorify the praises of your Lord before the rising of the sun, and before its setting” [Ta-Ha 20:130]. This interpretation is what is mentioned in the hadeeths about saying such and such in the morning and evening. What is meant is before the sun rises and before it sets. Therefore the time for these adhkaar is after Fajr and after ‘Asr.
