Ruqyah against Evil Eye, Magic, Illness
Sahih Muslim
Sahih Muslim
Abu Sa’id Al-Khudri (May Allah be pleased with him) reported:
Jibril (Gabriel) came to the Prophet (Sallallaahu alaihi wa Sallam) and said: “O Muhammad (Sallallaahu alaihi wa Sallam)! Do you feel sick?” He (Sallallaahu alaihi wa Sallam) said, “Yes.” Jibril supplicated thus (i.e., he performed Ruqyah):
Bismillahi arqeek, min kulli shay’in yu’dheek, min sharri kulli nafsin aw ‘aynin haasid, Allaahu yashfeek, Bismillaahi arqeek.
With the Name of Allah, I recite over you (to cleanse you) from all that troubles you, and from every harmful mischief and from the evil of the eyes of an envier. Allah will cure you; and with the Name of Allah, I recite over you.

Quran 7: 113
(113) And the magicians came to Pharaoh. They said, "Indeed for us is a reward if we are the predominant."
Quran 7: 114
(114) He said, "Yes, and, [moreover], you will be among those made near [to me]."
Quran 7: 115
(115) They said, "O Moses, either you throw [your staff], or we will be the ones to throw [first]."
Quran 7: 116
(116) He said, "Throw," and when they threw, they bewitched the eyes of the people and struck terror into them, and they presented a great [feat of] magic.[394]
Quran 7: 117
(117) And We inspired to Moses, "Throw your staff," and at once it devoured what they were falsifying.
Quran 7: 118
(118) So the truth was established, and abolished was what they were doing.
Quran 7: 119
(119) And they [i.e., Pharaoh and his people] were overcome right there and became debased.
Quran 7: 120
(120) And the magicians fell down in prostration [to Allāh].
(79) And Pharaoh said, "Bring to me every learned magician."
(80) So when the magicians came, Moses said to them, "Throw down whatever you will throw."
(81) And when they had thrown, Moses said, "What you have brought is [only] magic. Indeed, Allāh will expose its worthlessness. Indeed, Allāh does not amend the work of corrupters.
(82) And Allāh will establish the truth by His words, even if the criminals dislike it."
(65) They said, "O Moses, either you throw or we will be the first to throw."
(66) He said, "Rather, you throw." And suddenly their ropes and staffs seemed to him from their magic that they were moving [like snakes].
(67) And he sensed within himself apprehension, did Moses.
(68) We [i.e., Allāh] said, "Fear not. Indeed, it is you who are superior.
(69) And throw what is in your right hand; it will swallow up what they have crafted. What they have crafted is but the trick of a magician, and the magician will not succeed wherever he is."
(70) So the magicians fell down in prostration.[841] They said, "We have believed in the Lord of Aaron and Moses."
(1) Say, "I seek refuge in the Lord of daybreak
(2) From the evil of that which He created
(3) And from the evil of darkness when it settles
(4) And from the evil of the blowers in knots[2014]
(5) And from the evil of an envier when he envies."
(1) Say, "I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind,
(2) The Sovereign of mankind,
(4) From the evil of the retreating whisperer[2016] -
(5) Who whispers [evil] into the breasts of mankind -
(6) From among the jinn and mankind."[2017]
(1) In the name of Allāh,[2] the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful.[3]
(2) [All] praise is [due] to Allāh, Lord[4] of the worlds -
(3) The Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful,
(4) Sovereign of the Day of Recompense.[5]
(5) It is You we worship and You we ask for help.
(6) Guide us to the straight path -
(7) The path of those upon whom You have bestowed favor, not of those who have earned [Your] anger or of those who are astray.
(2) This is the Book about which there is no doubt, a guidance for those conscious of Allāh[8] -
(3) Who believe in the unseen, establish prayer,[9] and spend out of what We[10] have provided for them,
(4) And who believe in what has been revealed to you, [O Muḥammad], and what was revealed before you, and of the Hereafter they are certain [in faith].
(5) Those are upon [right] guidance from their Lord, and it is those who are the successful.
(163) And your god is one God. There is no deity [worthy of worship] except Him, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful.
(164) Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth, and the alternation of the night and the day, and the [great] ships which sail through the sea with that which benefits people, and what Allāh has sent down from the heavens of rain, giving life thereby to the earth after its lifelessness and dispersing therein every [kind of] moving creature, and [His] directing of the winds and the clouds controlled between the heaven and earth are signs for a people who use reason.
(285) The Messenger has believed in what was revealed to him from his Lord, and [so have] the believers. All of them have believed in Allāh and His angels and His books and His messengers, [saying], "We make no distinction between any of His messengers." And they say, "We hear and we obey. [We seek] Your forgiveness, our Lord, and to You is the [final] destination."
(286) Allāh does not charge a soul except [with that within] its capacity. It will have [the consequence of] what [good] it has gained, and it will bear [the consequence of] what [evil] it has earned. "Our Lord, do not impose blame upon us if we have forgotten or erred. Our Lord, and lay not upon us a burden like that which You laid upon those before us. Our Lord, and burden us not with that which we have no ability to bear. And pardon us; and forgive us; and have mercy upon us. You are our protector, so give us victory over the disbelieving people."[111]
Quran 3: 18
(18) Allāh witnesses that there is no deity except Him, and [so do] the angels and those of knowledge - [that He is] maintaining [creation] in justice. There is no deity except Him, the Exalted in Might, the Wise.
Quran 3: 19
(19) Indeed, the religion in the sight of Allāh is Islām. And those who were given the Scripture did not differ except after knowledge had come to them - out of jealous animosity between themselves. And whoever disbelieves in the verses of Allāh, then indeed, Allāh is swift in [taking] account.
Quran 3: 26
(26) Say, "O Allāh, Owner of Sovereignty, You give sovereignty to whom You will and You take sovereignty away from whom You will. You honor whom You will and You humble whom You will. In Your hand[121] is [all] good. Indeed, You are over all things competent.
Quran 3: 27
(27) You cause the night to enter the day, and You cause the day to enter the night; and You bring the living out of the dead, and You bring the dead out of the living. And You give provision to whom You will without account [i.e., limit or measure]."
Quran 3: 190
(190) Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth and the alternation of the night and the day are signs for those of understanding -
Quran 3: 191
(191) Who remember Allāh while standing or sitting or [lying] on their sides and give thought to the creation of the heavens and the earth, [saying], "Our Lord, You did not create this aimlessly; exalted are You [above such a thing]; then protect us from the punishment of the Fire.
Quran 3: 192
(192) Our Lord, indeed whoever You admit to the Fire - You have disgraced him, and for the wrongdoers there are no helpers.
Quran 3: 193
(193) Our Lord, indeed we have heard a caller [i.e., Prophet Muḥammad (ﷺ)] calling to faith, [saying], 'Believe in your Lord,' and we have believed. Our Lord, so forgive us our sins and remove from us our misdeeds and cause us to die among the righteous.
Quran 3: 194
(194) Our Lord, and grant us what You promised us through Your messengers and do not disgrace us on the Day of Resurrection. Indeed, You do not fail in [Your] promise."
Quran 3: 195
(195) And their Lord responded to them, "Never will I allow to be lost the work of [any] worker among you, whether male or female; you are of one another. So those who emigrated or were evicted from their homes or were harmed in My cause or fought or were killed - I will surely remove from them their misdeeds, and I will surely admit them to gardens beneath which rivers flow as reward from Allāh, and Allāh has with Him the best reward."
Quran 3: 196
(196) Be not deceived by the [uninhibited] movement of the disbelievers throughout the land.
Quran 3: 197
(197) [It is but] a small enjoyment; then their [final] refuge is Hell, and wretched is the resting place.
Quran 3: 198
(198) But those who feared their Lord will have gardens beneath which rivers flow, abiding eternally therein, as accommodation from Allāh. And that which is with Allāh is best for the righteous.
Quran 3: 199
(199) And indeed, among the People of the Scripture are those who believe in Allāh and what was revealed to you and what was revealed to them, [being] humbly submissive to Allāh. They do not exchange the verses of Allāh for a small price. Those will have their reward with their Lord. Indeed, Allāh is swift in account.
Quran 3: 200
(200) O you who have believed, persevere[152] and endure[153] and remain stationed[154] and fear Allāh that you may be successful.
(168) Indeed, those who disbelieve and commit wrong [or injustice] - never will Allāh forgive them, nor will He guide them to a path,
(169) Except the path of Hell; they will abide therein forever. And that, for Allāh, is [always] easy.
(50) And if you could but see when the angels take the souls of those who disbelieved...[453] They are striking their faces and their backs and [saying], "Taste the punishment of the Burning Fire.
(51) That is for what your hands have put forth [of evil] and because Allāh is not ever unjust to [His] servants."

(17) He will gulp it but will hardly [be able to] swallow it. And death will come to him from everywhere, but he is not to die. And before him is a massive punishment.

(42) And never think that Allāh is unaware of what the wrongdoers do. He only delays them [i.e., their account] for a Day when eyes will stare [in horror].
Quran 14: 43
(43) Racing ahead, their heads raised up, their glance does not come back to them,[663] and their hearts are void.
Quran 14: 44
(44) And, [O Muḥammad], warn the people of a Day when the punishment will come to them and those who did wrong will say, "Our Lord, delay us for a short term; we will answer Your call and follow the messengers." [But it will be said], "Had you not sworn, before, that for you there would be no cessation?[664]
Quran 14: 45
(45) And you lived among the dwellings of those who wronged themselves, and it had become clear to you how We dealt with them. And We presented for you [many] examples."

(46) And they had planned their plan, but with Allāh is [recorded] their plan, even if their plan had been [sufficient] to do away with the mountains.[665]
Quran 14: 47
(47) So never think that Allāh will fail in His promise to His messengers. Indeed, Allāh is Exalted in Might and Owner of Retribution.[666]
Quran 14: 48
(48) [It will be] on the Day the earth will be replaced by another earth, and the heavens [as well], and they [i.e., all creatures] will come out before Allāh, the One, the Prevailing,

Quran 14: 52
(52) This [Qur’ān] is notification for the people that they may be warned thereby and that they may know that He is but one God and that those of understanding will be reminded.
Quran 17: 81
(81) And say, "Truth has come, and falsehood has departed. Indeed is falsehood, [by nature], ever bound to depart."
Quran 17: 82
(82) And We send down of the Qur’ān that which is healing and mercy for the believers, but it does not increase the wrongdoers except in loss.
(39) And why did you, when you entered your garden, not say, 'What Allāh willed [has occurred]; there is no power except in Allāh'? Although you see me less than you in wealth and children,
(40) It may be that my Lord will give me [something] better than your garden and will send upon it a [disastrous] penalty from the sky, and it will become a smooth, dusty ground,
(41) Or its water will become sunken [into the earth], so you would never be able to seek it."
(67) Does man not remember that We created him before, while he was nothing?
(68) So by your Lord, We will surely gather them and the devils; then We will bring them to be present around Hell upon their knees.[822]
(69) Then We will surely extract from every sect those of them who were worst against the Most Merciful in insolence.
(70) Then, surely it is We who are most knowing of those most worthy of burning therein.
(71) And there is none of you except he will come to it.[823] This is upon your Lord an inevitability decreed.
(72) Then We will save those who feared Allāh and leave the wrongdoers within it, on their knees.
(19) These[921] are two adversaries who have disputed over their Lord. But those who disbelieved will have cut out for them garments of fire. Poured upon their heads will be scalding water
(20) By which is melted that within their bellies and [their] skins.
(21) And for [striking] them are maces of iron.
(22) Every time they want to get out of it [i.e., Hellfire] from anguish, they will be returned to it, and [it will be said], "Taste the punishment of the Burning Fire!"

(97) And say, "My Lord, I seek refuge in You from the incitements of the devils,
Quran 23: 98

(99) [For such is the state of the disbelievers] until, when death comes to one of them, he says, "My Lord, send me back
Quran 23: 100
(100) That I might do righteousness in that which I left behind."[967] No! It is only a word he is saying; and behind them is a barrier until the Day they are resurrected.
Quran 23: 101
(101) So when the Horn is blown, no relationship will there be among them that Day, nor will they ask about one another.
Quran 23: 102
(102) And those whose scales are heavy [with good deeds] - it is they who are the successful.
Quran 23: 103
(103) But those whose scales are light - those are the ones who have lost their souls, [being] in Hell, abiding eternally.
Quran 23: 104
(104) The Fire will sear their faces, and they therein will have taut smiles.[968]
Quran 23: 105
(105) [It will be said], "Were not My verses recited to you and you used to deny them?"
Quran 23: 106
(106) They will say, "Our Lord, our wretchedness overcame us, and we were a people astray.
Quran 23: 107
(107) Our Lord, remove us from it, and if we were to return [to evil], we would indeed be wrongdoers."
Quran 23: 108
(108) He will say, "Remain despised therein and do not speak to Me.
Quran 23: 115
(115) Then did you think that We created you uselessly and that to Us you would not be returned?"
Quran 23: 116
(116) So exalted is Allāh, the Sovereign,[969] the Truth;[970] there is no deity except Him, Lord of the Noble Throne.
(2) By the wise[1261] Qur’ān,
(3) Indeed you, [O Muḥammad], are from among the messengers,
(5) [This is] a revelation of the Exalted in Might, the Merciful,
(6) That you may warn a people whose forefathers were not warned, so they are unaware.
(7) Already the word [i.e., decree] has come into effect upon most of them, so they do not believe.
(8) Indeed, We have put shackles on their necks, and they are to their chins, so they are with heads [kept] aloft.
(9) And We have put before them a barrier and behind them a barrier and covered them, so they do not see.
(10) And it is all the same for them whether you warn them or do not warn them - they will not believe.
(11) You can only warn one who follows the message and fears the Most Merciful unseen. So give him good tidings of forgiveness and noble reward.
(12) Indeed, it is We who bring the dead to life and record what they have put forth and what they left behind, and all things We have enumerated in a clear register.
(1) By those [angels] lined up in rows
(2) And those who drive [the clouds]
(3) And those who recite the message,[1286]
(4) Indeed, your God is One,
(5) Lord of the heavens and the earth and that between them and Lord of the sunrises.[1287]
(6) Indeed, We have adorned the nearest heaven with an adornment of stars
(7) And as protection against every rebellious devil
(8) [So] they may not listen to the exalted assembly [of angels] and are pelted from every side,[1288]
(9) Repelled; and for them is a constant punishment,
Quran 37: 10
(10) Except one who snatches [some words] by theft, but they are pursued by a burning flame, piercing [in brightness].
Quran 37: 158
(43) Indeed, the tree of zaqqūm
(44) Is food for the sinful.
(45) Like murky oil, it boils within bellies
(46) Like the boiling of scalding water.
(47) [It will be commanded], "Seize him and drag him into the midst of the Hellfire,
(48) Then pour over his head from the torment of scalding water."
(49) [It will be said], "Taste! Indeed, you are the honored, the noble![1466]
Quran 46: 29
(29) And [mention, O Muḥammad], when We directed to you a few of the jinn, listening to the Qur’ān. And when they attended it, they said, "Listen attentively." And when it was concluded, they went back to their people as warners.
Quran 46: 30
(30) They said, "O our people, indeed we have heard a [recited] Book revealed after Moses confirming what was before it which guides to the truth and to a straight path.
Quran 46: 31
(31) O our people, respond to the Caller [i.e., Messenger] of Allāh[1488] and believe in him; He [i.e., Allāh] will forgive for you your sins and protect you from a painful punishment.
Quran 46: 32
(32) But he who does not respond to the Caller of Allāh will not cause failure [to Him] upon earth, and he will not have besides Him any protectors. Those are in manifest error."

(21) If We had sent down this Qur’ān upon a mountain, you would have seen it humbled and splitting from fear of Allāh. And these examples We present to the people that perhaps they will give thought.
(22) He is Allāh, other than whom there is no deity, Knower of the unseen and the witnessed.[1657] He is the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful.
(23) He is Allāh, other than whom there is no deity, the Sovereign,[1658] the Pure,[1659] the Perfection,[1660] the Grantor of Security,[1661] the Overseer,[1662] the Exalted in Might,[1663] the Compeller,[1664] the Superior.[1665] Exalted is Allāh above whatever they associate with Him.
(24) He is Allāh, the Creator,[1666] the Producer,[1667] the Fashioner;[1668] to Him belong the best names.[1669] Whatever is in the heavens and earth is exalting Him. And He is the Exalted in Might, the Wise.[1670]
(51) And indeed, those who disbelieve would almost make you slip with their eyes [i.e., looks] when they hear the message, and they say, "Indeed, he is mad."
(52) But it is not except a reminder to the worlds.
(19) So as for he who is given his record in his right hand, he will say, "Here, read my record!
(20) Indeed, I was certain that I would be meeting my account."
(21) So he will be in a pleasant life -
(22) In an elevated garden,
(23) Its [fruit] to be picked hanging near.
(24) [They will be told], "Eat and drink in satisfaction for what you put forth[1742] in the days past."
(25) But as for he who is given his record in his left hand, he will say, "Oh, I wish I had not been given my record
(26) And had not known what is my account.
(27) I wish it [i.e., my death] had been the decisive one.[1743]
(28) My wealth has not availed me.
(29) Gone from me is my authority."[1744]
(30) [Allāh will say], "Seize him and shackle him.
(31) Then into Hellfire drive him.
(32) Then into a chain whose length is seventy cubits insert him."
(33) Indeed, he did not used to believe in Allāh, the Most Great,
(34) Nor did he encourage the feeding of the poor.
(35) So there is not for him here this Day any devoted friend
(36) Nor any food except from the discharge of wounds;
(37) None will eat it except the sinners.
(1) Say, [O Muḥammad], "It has been revealed to me that a group of the jinn listened and said, 'Indeed, we have heard an amazing Qur’ān [i.e., recitation].
(2) It guides to the right course, and we have believed in it. And we will never associate with our Lord anyone.
(3) And [it teaches] that exalted is the nobleness of our Lord; He has not taken a wife or a son
(4) And that our foolish one [i.e., Iblees][1766] has been saying about Allāh an excessive transgression.
(5) And we had thought that mankind and the jinn would never speak about Allāh a lie.
(6) And there were men from mankind who sought refuge in men from the jinn, so they [only] increased them in burden [i.e., sin].
(7) And they had thought, as you thought, that Allāh would never send anyone [as a messenger].
(8) And we have sought [to reach] the heaven but found it filled with powerful guards and burning flames.
(9) And we used to sit therein in positions for hearing,[1767] but whoever listens now will find a burning flame lying in wait for him.
(10) And we do not know [therefore] whether evil is intended for those on earth or whether their Lord intends for them a right course.
(11) And among us are the righteous, and among us are [others] not so; we were [of] divided ways.[1768]
(12) And we have become certain that we will never cause failure to Allāh upon earth, nor can we escape Him by flight.
(13) And when we heard the guidance [i.e., the Qur’ān], we believed in it. And whoever believes in his Lord will not fear deprivation or burden.[1769]
(1) By the sky and the knocker
(2) And what can make you know what is the knocker?
(3) It is the piercing star[1901].
(4) There is no soul but that it has over it a protector.
(5) So let man observe from what he was created.
(6) He was created from a fluid, ejected,
(7) Emerging from between the backbone and the ribs.
(8) Indeed, He [i.e., Allāh], to return him [to life], is Able.
(9) The Day when secrets will be put on trial,[1902]
(10) Then he [i.e., man] will have no power or any helper.
(11) By the sky which sends back[1903]
(12) And [by] the earth which splits,[1904]
(13) Indeed, it [i.e., the Qur’ān] is a decisive statement,
(14) And it is not amusement.
(15) Indeed, they are planning a plan,
(16) But I am planning a plan.
(17) So allow time for the disbelievers. Leave them awhile.[1905]
(1) When the earth is shaken with its [final] earthquake
(2) And the earth discharges its burdens[1962]
(3) And man says,[1963] "What is [wrong] with it?" -
(4) That Day, it will report its news
(5) Because your Lord has inspired [i.e., commanded] it.
(6) That Day, the people will depart[1964] separated [into categories] to be shown [the result of] their deeds.
(7) So whoever does an atom's weight[1965] of good will see it,
(8) And whoever does an atom's weight of evil will see it.

Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was ill, he would recite al-Mu’awwidhat over himself and spit drily. When his pain grew intense, I recited over him and wiped him with his own hand, seeking its barakah (blessing).” (Narrated by al-Bukhari, 4728; Muslim, 2192)
A group of the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) set out on a journey and travelled until they came near one of the Arab tribes. They asked them for hospitality but they refused to do so. Then the leader of that tribe was stung, and they tried everything but nothing helped him. Then some of them said, Why don’t you go to those people who are staying (nearby)? Maybe some of them have something. So they went to them and said, O people, our leader has been stung and we have tried everything and nothing helped him. Do any of you have something? One of them said, Yes, by Allah. I will perform ruqyah for him, but by Allah we asked you for hospitality and you did not give us anything, so we will not perform ruqyah for you unless you give us something in return. So they agreed on a flock of sheep, then he started to blow on him and recite Al-hamdu Lillahi Rabb il-‘Alamin. Then he recovered quickly from his complaint and started walking, and there was nothing wrong with him. Then they gave them what they had agreed to, and some of them (the Sahabah) said, Let us share it out. The one who had performed ruqyah said, Do not do anything until we come to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and tell him what happened, and we will wait and see what he tells us to do. So they came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and told him what had happened. He said, “How did you know that it is a ruqyah?” Then he said, “You did the right thing. Share them out, and give me a share.” And the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) smiled. (Narrated by al-Bukhari, 2276, and by Muslim, 2201).
The scholars of the Standing Committee for Issuing Fatwas said:
Asking others to offer du‘aa’ for one and asking them to perform ruqyah are permissible, but not doing them and doing without people and doing these things for oneself is better.
